With every cyclist sooner or later happens such an unpleasant situation as a punctured or cut of bicycle tubular tire. If you found that the wheel is flat at home – that is one thing (although it also requires some knowledge in repairing the tires), but what if you punctured it during a multi-kilometer ride, for example, somewhere in the field? How in such a situation to determine the location of the puncture, how to remove the tubular tire from the rim, how to correctly replace and seal the tube bike, what glue and patches are best suited for this purpose. Additionally, in this article, we will consider some of the nuances of repair and proper use of bicycle tubular tires.

What Should You Have for Tubular Tire Puncture Repair?

On frequent trips away from civilization, your own repair kit is the only thing that will help with installing tubular tires in case of a puncture.

  • LED flashlight (you will not be able to cope with repair at night or at dusk without the proper flashlight);
  • patches- you need at least two of them, but it is better to have more. Thankfully they do not take up much space. Previously, cyclists used pieces of rubber, but now you can inexpensively buy more convenient specialized patches;
  • pump (you need to inflate the wheel after tubular tires repair);
  • plastic sides (2 pieces). These are special devices that facilitate the process of removing tubular tires. It is sold in any bike store and has an affordable price;
  • suitable wrench for dismantling the wheel;
  • sandpaper- needed for scraping the puncture site and removing tubular tire glue, so that the new patch will stick better;
  • rubber glue. The world invented no better option, but to fix the patch with the glue;
  • spare tubes. In some cases, the damage is so extensive that the repair is impossible, the only thing left is to completely change the tubular tire.

How to Change a Tubular Tire?

During long journeys, it is advisable to carry not only a bike tool but also a spare tube, with which you can quickly replace the broken tube and ride on. After all, it is much faster than waiting for the glue to dry on a newly repaired tube. Therefore, in this section, we will look at such a question as to how to remove the tire of the bike and make a replacement when it is punctured.

Here are some easy, clear instructions on how to quickly and correctly repair a bicycle inner tube.

Find a Puncture on the Tire

Starting at the nipple, check all sides of the bike tire to find the cause of the puncture. Remove any shards of glass or sand that you notice. Even if you find one possible cause, continue checking the tire until you get back to the nipple. Be careful with mounting tubular tires as it is harder to find a cause on them.

Remove the Tire

Remove the air in the tube. On the side of the wheel opposite the valve, use the special tool to loosen about 5 cm of the tire. By moving the special tool alternately around the diameter of the wheel, remove one side of the tire from the rim. Pull out the tube. Remove the whole tire, this can be done manually by shifting the whole tire in one place from the wheel rim.

Inflate the Punctured Tube

Inflate the inner tube and listen for air leaks. Inspect the inner tube from all sides. If the hole cannot be found, re-inflate the camera and place it in a container filled with water. Once you find the puncture point, dry the camera before proceeding to the next step. Be careful: when inflating the camera, do not twist the pump so that you do not tear the nipple out of the camera.

Prepare the Tire

Choose the correct size rubber patch – use a larger than smaller patch size if in doubt. How to patch tubular tires? Rough the surface of the tire around the hole with sandpaper. Make sure all the casting marks on the tire are completely erased and the surface is flat. Apply one drop of rubber glue and spread it around the hole about 2 cm larger. Let it dry – the rubber glue will change from shiny to matte. Apply again in the same manner.

Tape the Puncture Point

How to install tubular tires with tape? Inflate the camera a little – this will help highlight the position of the hole. Press the patch firmly onto the puncture site after removing the foil. If there is thin cellophane on top of the patch, it can be left on. Sprinkle chalk, talcum powder, or road dust around the area around the patch where glue remains to prevent the camera from sticking to the tire.

Check the Tire

Before installing tubular tires with tape, check the inside of the tire to find the cause of your puncture. The location of the puncture on the tube will help you find the cause of the puncture. Run your fingers inside the tire and carefully palpate the inside to find the source of the puncture and remove it.

Reinstall the Tire

After repairing the tube and checking the tire for glass, spikes, or any other sharp debris, reinstall one side of the tire on the rim. Slightly inflate the tube and install it on the rim, first by inserting the nipple into the rim hole. Begin installing the other side of the tire from the opposite side of the rim to the nipple, using your fingers to lift the tire beads (the part of the tire that connects the wheel rim) over the edge. Install the entire tire onto the rim in this manner.

Make a Final Check

Make sure that the tube is not wedged between the rim and the bead of the tire. Inflate the inner tube to the point where the tire is still soft but has taken its shape. Make sure that the sides of the tire are evenly spaced in the rim all around the rim. If not, deflate some air from the inner tube and position the tire evenly around the rim.

Inflate the tube with recommended pressure and check again that the sides of the tire are still sitting flat and that the tube is nowhere to be seen from under the tire. Finally, make sure that the tire tread is placed fairly flat by turning the wheel. If not, deflate the tube and start this step again from the beginning.
