That’s how we’ve put together our feelings and tips from experienced cyclists to create an article about riding bike in rain. Your clothes, transport, and road surfaces affect your safety on the road. We will touch on the most important things that you should pay attention to when cycling in rain.

Clothes should be dry

Whatever the season, bicycling in the rain in wet clothes will lead to the fact that even the slight wind can cause you to freeze and catch a cold very quickly. To avoid health problems, put a waterproof jacket with an elongated rear hollow and hood in your bike bag. Modern jackets are made of materials that are well ventilated and resist you getting soaked inside due to sweating. Woolen socks and polypropylene thermal underwear are not superfluous. Put on your hands cycling gloves with protection against wind and moisture.

Protect your eyes

For weather conditions with rainfall, glasses with transparent lenses are the best choice. Unfortunately, conventional sunglasses prevent good visibility. Is it safe to bike in the rain without sufficient vision? A bicycle cap with a visor will additionally protect you from raindrops and dirt.

Mark your presence on the road

Bicycle commuting in the rain should be especially well visible to other drivers. Hang your bicycle around with bright LED lights. You can attach them not only to your bike but also to your backpack or helmet. Your visibility in the rain gets worse, so you should have a flashing red LED light on the back of your bike.

Protect the chain

Cycling in the rain can cause the chain to rust, so it needs to be protected with thick and viscous grease. For it to penetrate well into the links, the chain must be completely dry. Earlier, we already wrote how to clean the bike from rust.

Install the mudguards

Nothing will protect you from dirt flying in all directions, as the mudguards will do it. They will not only protect you from dirty splashes but will also protect other cyclists if they ride nearby. Short pads will not help you during the rain, so we recommend full-size iron models.

Check the brake pads

Brake pads wear out primarily by biking in the rain. Almost all wheels must make a full turn to remove water from the braking surface. Plan your braking to avoid trouble.

Pay attention to the road

Be sure to consider the fact that the main roads become very slippery. Oil and gasoline accumulated inside the road surface. The first drops of rain push them out, which makes driving on such a road very dangerous. Look carefully at the road, if you see huge oil stains in puddles, wet leaves, or hatch covers, know that they are very slippery – be extremely careful when braking.

Turn correctly

In order not to fall with your bike on a turn – you need to hold it upright. You need to keep your body in balance – it must be at a higher inclination than the bike. And, of course, control the speed on turns.

The best option is just to give up the ride. A wet road, clothing, and bicycle is a forced measure, not a normal condition for a journey. You risk much more than usual because visibility deteriorates, and every stop with brakes can turn into a skid biking in the rain.

However, some circumstances can push you out of the house. If you still can’t avoid riding a bike in rain, then at least listen to our advice. We believe that this will help you get to where you will and stay healthy.
