Many of us have probably wondered: if to attach a generator to a bicycle, how much electricity could be generated? Scientists have long ago calculated that a cyclist, depending on the level of training, can generate between 0.15 and 0.25 kWh. Although there are records. In one test, scientists managed to generate 12 kWh in 24 hours. But this is not the limit, Siemens company claimed to have created an installation with which a person could get 4.2 kWh in an hour. And Manoj Bhargava, a 62-year-old inventor, has assembled a unique exercise bike generator.

By exercising on it for only one hour you can provide electricity for a small house for a whole day. Would you work out for an hour every day if working out provided the electricity to your house for twenty-four hours? Nowadays, we are searching for different ways to mitigate global warming and climate change, to improve the energy efficiency of our homes. As well we can decentralize electricity generation. All these ways can help us to reduce our carbon footprints and energy consumption. In theory, switching to solar, wind and even kinetic generator DIY can make the house more efficient as you depend less on grid power.

Can you gain electricity for your own use with a bicycle generator DIY?

Even in the areas or states with the greenest environment, where the government uses all kinds of renewable energy, you can still find greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with a significant amount, caused by our daily consumption. For example, the simple hydroelectric installation damages the environment severely and emits methane. You can drive yourself crazy if you analyze every single step and move in order to protect nature and the environment. The reduction of the human impact on climate change is the right mission, and currently, with all high-tech gadgets, we can afford to become more eco-friendly, by enjoying the newest technologies.

Hence this article is about the DIY bike generator – instead of going to the gym to exercise, how about charging your phone with a pedal at home? You can generate electricity at home with your bike just doing a daily workout – sounds like the perfect way to contribute to climate change!

How does the DIY pedal generator work?

To turn the generator on and start charging any kind of battery, you just need to pedal on your bike. With this action, you will set in motion the flywheel and the flywheel will launch the pedal powered generator DIY. If you are an owner of a high-efficiency flat, where only LED bulbs are used, cycling may be more than enough to meet your basic powering and lighting needs. In reality, the generators, powered by bikes can produce energy only for small houses. They can light a few bulbs or give the energy to turn the fan on, or in case of charging portable devices like phones. Of course, you will not be able to heat the water or cook something by using a DIY bicycle generator, however, technologies are developing and soon we will invent the needed devices! So, the bicycle can be used to both reduce the energy costs and to eliminate the problem of overweight. The bicycle is also a clean way to generate energy. Then why don’t you make your own pedal generator DIY and save the Earth?

  • An interesting fact about generator bike: in Brazil, instead of solitary confinement prisoners and troublemakers generate electricity with bicycles. They charge batteries, which at night are used to power the city of Santa Rita’s light fixtures. And the idea was taken by the warden of this facility at the women’s prison in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Prisoners in Arizona pedal for 16 hours a day and it counts for a day of incarceration. That’s how they reduce their sentence.

How to assemble a bike generator for a house?

You will need:

  • 12-volt collector motor;
  • motor axis nozzle – chuck from a drill;
  • an uninterruptible power supply or a 12 to 220 inverter;
  • a diode for 10 amps: D214, D242, D215, D232, KD203, etc.;
  • wires;
  • bicycle;
  • 12-volt battery (the higher power the longer its charge will last).

Where to get the parts for bike generator DIY?

  • The motor, preferably the cooling fan motor: you can buy it in an auto store. It is not expensive, but if you want to buy it for nothing, you can twist it at a metal recycling center, from an old car.
  • An uninterruptible power supply from a personal computer: you can find an old one with a non-replaceable internal battery. Or a 12 to 220 inverter, sold in car dealerships.
  • A 10 amp diode, for example: D305, D214, D242, D243, D245, D215, D232, D246, D203, D233, KD210, KD203, etc. Sold in radio parts stores. Or you can unscrew it from old equipment.

The assembly process of pedal power generator DIY

First, we set up the bike so that the rear wheel was suspended above the ground and freely rotated. To fix the bike in the right position you can use improvised materials, for example, from boards you can make a stand. Attach a drill chuck to the motor axle and mount the motor so that the spring presses it securely to the rear wheel. The connection should be secure with no slippage.

In our case, the motor acts as a generator, so you can use any 12-volt collector motor. The more power the motor, the more energy it will generate. In order to find out how much power this motor can produce in generator mode, connect a 90 W light bulb to it and see that the generator capacity is so high that the light bulb could burn out as the engine speed increases.

For the accumulation of electricity from a spin bike generator, it is advisable to use a battery. Good for this purpose is a rechargeable battery. To prevent the motor from spinning on the battery, you need to assemble a circuit with a diode, which will block the current in the right direction and prevent unnecessary discharge. The anode of the diode to the plus of the motor, the cathode to the plus of the battery. Now you can charge a 12-volt battery, the voltage from which can be drawn for equipment with the appropriate voltage. But in order to make the generator output voltage of 220 volts, an uninterruptible power supply from a computer will help.

An uninterruptible power supply has a small, low-power 12-volt battery in its design. When the mains power goes out, the inverter that is built into the circuit of the UPS, increases the 12 volts to 220, allowing the computer to run on it for a while. In order to ensure long-term operation, you can remove the low-power battery from the circuit and connect a powerful car battery instead, as was written above.

Now by simply turning the pedals, using your bicycle generator DIY, you can get 220 volts, almost the same as in the normal network. Such a generator is able to power many appliances in the house. There’s one thing, though. If you connect an uninterruptible power supply to a load of more than 500 watts, it begins to warm up and quickly discharges the battery. Therefore, you need to commensurate the power of the bicycle generator, the built-in battery, and the intended load. Instead of an uninterruptible power supply, you can use a car inverter from 12 volts to 220 volts.

As you charge the battery by pedaling, the battery voltage will increase. When it reaches 14.4 volts, the battery is charged. The battery should not be charged further because the electrolyte will start to boil off if it is overcharged. In contrast to the gasoline generator, bike powered generator DIY does not require resources, which may be in short supply.

A few months of using this recumbent bike generator will show pretty good results! The battery charging current will be about 10 amps and will depend on how you pedal. If you pedal slowly, you get 5 amps and if you pedal fast, you get 20 amps. Average generator power – 120 watts. Basically, this generator will help to charge small power consumers:

  • 3 watts – phone charging;
  • 5 W – radio receiver;
  • 7 W – tablet charging and further use;
  • 10 W – charging camera, flashlight, and video camera;
  • 12 Watt – energy-saving bulb;
  • 30 W – stereo system;
  • 40 Watt – laptop or computer;
  • 70 W – TV.

The charge will be enough for almost a day. Just an hour of pedaling and you could use the electricity again.
The electric generator will allow you to get the additional benefit of pedaling – completely “free” to get energy for lighting your home facilities. In case you do not want to assemble the generator at home, you may buy the bike tire generator in every bicycle store. We advise you to order bicycle accessories from China – it is much cheaper. For example, on Aliexpress you may find the bicycle generator you need.
