Cycling Can Help You Save Your Sight According to a Study
Daily cycling reduces the risk of getting cataracts according to a new study conducted by Xi’an Jiaotong University and the University of South Australia (UniSA).
The Health benefits of cycling are widely known but a recent scientific study conducted by Xi’an Jiaotong University and the University of South Australia (UniSA) has found that one hour of daily cycling lowers the risk of getting a cataract by two percent.
It’s not much but the main idea goes way deeper. A cataract is a chronic illness that lies in the eye’s clouding due to the oxidative process. Intense physical activities stimulate the body’s antioxidant defense system preventing the rapid development of diseases such as cataracts.
The study was based upon the analysis of medical data of more than one hundred and seventy thousand people throughout the world. The study has shown that people who perform intense and regular physical activities have a lower chance of getting cataracts. The estimated difference is about ten percent.
Scientists have calculated how cycling affects the cataract’s development. They have found that one hour of cycling stimulates the body’s defense system enough to lower the risk of getting cataracts by two percent.
This number could be increased proportionally to the quantity and frequency of physical performances. The more you train the lower chance of getting cataracts you have.
The reason for such tendency hides in the eye lens’s outer layer – polyunsaturated fatty acids that protect the lens’s surface. Oxidative processes destroy this outer layer damaging the lens and causing irreversible eye clouding.
Regular cycling also improves lipid balance and increases the level of good cholesterol which stimulates the body’s antioxidant processes. But one thing should be remembered well – direct sunbeams damage the eyes which can cause sight-related problems in the future. You should wear sunglasses in order to avoid damaging the lens.
